Merle,
I am a UU who recently learned about you. A good UU friend, Carl Winkler ( Emerson UU Church in Cobb county ) has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and I wondered to myself if his connecting with you might be very helpful. Like you, he has a family, his lovely wife, Masako, and adopted son, Alex, is from a Jewish background, and is struggling with his diagnosis and disease. I am wondering if he chooses to, what the best way he might get in touch with you.
Thanks so very much,
Sandi Tax

Hello Merle,

spent time tonight catching up on your news. Enjoyed seeing picture of your family.

Macy's Day Parade, huh? what connections you have. ARRGH

My holidays were good - I had time with family and Ron and I made a short trip to North Carolina to visit old friends, which my respite.

Happy new year, friend.

Merle,

You and your family came to mind over the holidays and I wanted to try to get in touch with you. I am very sorry to hear about your condition. Cancer sucks.

My mom passed away from Burkitt's Lymphoma in 2005 after a slow find of it. She was also treated at Winship, a wonderful facility. Winship was a huge part of my life for a few years, as were 6 + 7 E at Emory Hospital.

I know how hard this is on you and your family. My thoughts are prayers are with all the Hamburgers. I will keep up with your blog.

God bless.

Hi Merle,
Craig shared the most recent newsletter with me and I have read most of your blog. With your permission, I'll share the blog with my Georgia College Health Education students in a class in Spring 09 called Communicable and Non-communicable Diseases. I think it is important to include the human side of disease and not just the science. If you would like, please address a post to the class, and I'll be sure they see it, and encourage them to comment.
I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and I'll follow along in your journey.
We still play poker fairly regularly. If it wasn't for you we might still be playing penny ante poker-remember you got us to move up to nickel ante? Craig will still, on occasion, knock over my pile of poker chips, claiming, "ghost of Merle" or "Merle made me do it". I have not played bridge again since I had that near perfect hand when I played with you and MariBeth!
Take care.

Hey, Merle. Remember me? We met in Vegas at DWF several years ago and quickly clicked. Sure it helped that we had PWP before that. I was chatting with Monica of Monica and Diehl Martin and she told me the news. Totally sucks and googling you, I found your blog, which I'm enjoying. I can hear your voice here, definitely. :)

Just WOW!

Journey or not, glad I found you again. :) I don't hang on PWP at all. DWF yes. I'm hitting your website next.

Take care,
Kristin

Hello,
You don't know me. I was surfing, looking for information on Juan Sarmiento and your blog popped up.

I had a Whipple 3 weeks ago at Emory. We found my tumor by accident. I walked into Emory, healthy (no jaundice, normal amylase and lipase levels) and was rolled out a week later, a little yellow around the gills. I am very fortunate. I had a low grade malignancy, it was found early and I will not need chemo.

I did look at my options: Georgetown University, USC, Dr. George Daneker at Saint Joes here in Atlanta. I did not want a Whipple. I wanted a short cut, I wanted the cyberknife. This was not in my life plan, but it wasn't up to me.....

The experience at Emory was a good one. While bed placement post op was an issue, the nursing care I received was exceptional. I was impressed by the level of professionalism, knowledge and compassion shown by all whose path I crossed. Ok, so I'm an ICU nurse from right across the street at CHOA....I don't think this factored in, really.

I cannot imagine your journey. I hope for good things for your wife, your kids and for you.

Kind Regards,
Marybeth Fazio-Norwood

Hi Merle,

Long time, it has been about 20 years since I last saw you and Marybeth. Lynn and Arlene have kept me up to date through the years about you and your siblings; degrees, jobs, birth of your children, and now your battle with cancer.

First of all, I want to say how proud I am of you and all that you have accomplished. Most of my memories of you are as a chubby loud self-centered kid, who was very bright, slightly obnoxious and more than anything, very lovable.

From your writing it is apparent that you grew into a sensitive man and from your pictures it is apparent that you are no longer chubby.

I just want you to know that my prayers are with you, and I hope to see you here in Israel one day.

Your still chubby and slightly obnoxious ex stepbrother in law,

Larry

Merle,
Its Don Davidson...just catching up on your blog and wanted to say Hi. Do know that I am "thinking about you and sending energy and love your way" indeed...I am also talking to God about you (my definition of prayer). I really am doing both so we'll cover all our bases. Thanks for being real and sharing your journey.
Stay strong.
