How Cancer is similar to Pregnancy…

How’s that for a catchy title??  Kind of provocative, if I do say so myself.  But before I go into the reason for the title of this post, let me take a moment to give a quick “Merle” update:  Today was the first day in which I actually ate 3 meals.  I started out the day with a bowl of cereal and an apple (’cause “An apple a day…”).  Lunch included a small salad and some chicken.  I went completely crazy for dinner having a spinach chicken wrap and <gasp> fries.  Now, I may pay for this gustatory splurge tomorrow, but right now I’m feeling okay.

Based on this first week of treatment, it seems as if the nausea is tied to the radiation rather than the chemo.  I seem to begin feeling queasy about 4 or so hours after the radiation.  We’ll see if this continues, but I think this week has largely been spent allowing my body adjust to treatment.

Now, in several separate conversations I have expressed to folks (including several women) that I wake up in the morning feeling mildly queasy, with nothing looking particularly attractive as far as food.  In many instances looking at food, actually has increased my nausea.  On top of all that, I have been quite tired much of the day, needing a rest for at least an hour or two each day.  On at least 2 occasions, separate women said something along the lines of: “Finally!  Now a man can experience what it is like to be pregnant.”  Now this was not said maliciously (well, maybe a little seriously, but mostly just in fun); however, I have a better appreciation of what MaryBeth meant when she said she would feel queasy at just the smell of food.

(Of course, if I wanted to once again display my warped sense of humor, I would point out that the results of my last CT scan seemed to indicate that my tumor; the tumor measured about 3.7 cm in the MRI in mid-April and now measures 3.8cm by 4.5cm, according to the CT scan from mid-May.  Thus, if one were completely devoid of good taste, one could make a comment about my tumor growing just like a baby.  Good thing I am not devoid of good taste!)

In something of a repeat from last weekend, my mother traveled to Atlanta today to spend time with me and my family.  (Her trip was planned prior to my trip up north last weekend.)  Her visits are often a time for my Mother to rest and relax — to catch up on her sleep and not to have to worry about doing chores and what not.  Also, the kids are very excited to see their ‘Granny.’  So all in all, I am looking forward to a pleasant weekend.

More tomorrow.
